On the sunny morning of Saturday April 25, more than 200 volunteers came out to join the Convent Glen Orleans Wood Community Association Environmental Committee to pick up garbage in our community for our annual Cleaning the Capital event.
We expected to the event to be impactful, but we had no idea just how impactful it would turn out to be.

Together, we picked up and removed a whopping 2,126 lbs of garbage from the Convent Glen area – that’s nearly a metric ton of waste removed from our soils, streets and waterways.
Adults, kids, teens and families were in attendance, and thanks to the Ottawa Riverkeepers, were equipped with everything they needed to the job. This outcome could simply not have happened without the hundreds of community members who chose to volunteer their morning to protect their local environment.
This event was also made possible thanks to our caring community partners: Mighty Mouse Junk Removal hauled the dozens of garbage bags, recycling and large items off site, and Golden Fries Orleans graciously gifted volunteers with food vouchers for a delicious discounted lunch. Thanks to Place d’Orleans, Metro (Jeanne d’Arc) and The Home Depot (Orleans), participants were properly equipped and fed on the day of the event.

We are moved by the participation, enthusiasm and impact that community members have shown through the 2026 Cleaning the Capital event. Thank you to every person who was a part of it – you truly made a difference.
What a powerful act of community and environmental stewardship. Every person in this event was a volunteer; you prove that everyone can make an impact.
This is what community looks like.
