CGOWCA Bridge Committee
On January 30, 2025, Minister Steven MacKinnon announced that the Government of Canada is committed to building a multimodal bridge in the eastern part of the National Capital Region as outlined in the Fall Economic Statement. He also stated that Kettle Island (Corridor 5) has been selected as the site for the new “Eastern Bridge” (See image below) You can read the press release here or watch Minister MacKinnon’s announcement here.

Key Highlights:
- An Integrated Project Office – comprising staff from Public Services and Procurement Canada (PSPC), the National Capital Commission (NCC), and a technical advisor (to be selected) – will oversee the project and will proceed with pre-planning work.
- The federal government has allocated $221M for pre-construction phases to be carried out until 2028.
- The Eastern Bridge is expected to be operational as early as 2034 based on the current project plan.
- Public, stakeholders, and Indigenous community feedback will be solicited throughout the various stages of the project.
While the current government has signaled a strong commitment to this project, it will likely become a key issue in the upcoming federal election. The Bridge Committee, and ideally our community, will closely monitor developments and participate in election discussions so our politicians know we are watching, knowledgeable, and concerned.
