The Community Association is thrilled to announce another Gold Community Builder has graciously stepped up to sponsor our mission and vision. Almanac is an urban mill and bakery in Ottawa’s East End, and Gabrielle Prud’homme is the owner who calls Convent Glen home.
Almanac is committed to sharing delicious, restorative and healthy Canadian food; sourcing certified organic heritage grains farmed with integrity and transforming them into fresh stone-milled flour with purpose and intention. They believe that by growing the demand for good food we make space for better farming and ultimately create a more sustainable planet.
Gabby and her team have dedicated themselves to a return to the simpler flours and heritage grains that nourished us since the dawn of civilization; nothing more or less than the entire seed crushed between two stones, enjoyed fresh, with all of its nutrients and flavour still intact. Milling by stone is less efficient than modern commercial roller mills, sure, but they believe that time spent delivering a better product is time well spent. In addition, most grains grown today have been created to maximize yield over nutrition, and often require industrial fertilizers, herbicides and other harmful chemicals. The “landrace” or heritage varieties of grain they source are plants that have been locally adapted and developed to local soils and climate, making them naturally disease resistant and allowing them to thrive. These old varieties are best suited to organic, low-input agriculture where no chemicals are used, providing a nutritious and distinct harvest, without the environmental impact of large-scale farming.
They also have a delicious bakery that produces healthy breads, snacks, granola that are all made with intention and care for the environment and our wellbeing. Make sure to visit them in nearby Canotek park and you can also order online for pickup or delivery at almanacgrain.ca.
The results are delicious and healthy flours and baked products that nourish the body and the extended communities and farmlands around us. We are proud to partner with Almanac Urban Mill and Bakery and hope that we can continue to build our partnership and support one another.
